Xanthelasma

What is Xanthelasma?

Xanthelasma is a soft, yellowish, fatty deposit that forms under your skin. It’s not harmful, but in rare cases it may be an indicator of possible heart disease. That’s why it’s a good idea to have it checked by your doctor or a dermatologist.

Xanthelasma are always benign; that is, they’re not cancerous and they don’t spread the way a cancer might. They rarely impair vision. But they can be a sign of hyperlipidemia — high levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, or other lipids (fats) in the blood.

Xanthelasma are generally not painful, but they can gradually build up and cause more discomfort if left untreated.
